Going For The Chop

I have had long hair for most of my adult life. I can’t remember the last time it was above my collar bones. Up until now that is! I did have the typical bob and blunt cut fringe back in the 90s when it was all the rage but I was only 6 at the time. I still cringe at some of those photos.

I remember from high school onwards I envied anyone with super long luscious locks. I even went and bought some incredibly tacky clip in hair extensions. I couldn’t have what I envied due to a bleaching addiction that I have thankfully overcome. I decided to die my hair back to it’s naturally dark blonde hair colour and stopped cutting it all together. Yes, I didn’t even trim it. Once I did this it grew at the speed of light. I swear I went from medium length hair to extra long overnight. Someone even asked me if I had gotten extensions to which I replied with a rather curt ‘no’. So if you want long hair and you want it NOW, stop dying it! This eliminates the need for cutting as you are no longer damaging it with all those chemicals. I think I trimmed my hair once the whole time it was long. There was just no need as it wasn’t dry or split anymore.

Unfortunately I do not have a picture to share with you all when it was at it’s longest. This is largely due to the fact that I was getting so sick of it and just threw it in a bun all the time. At it’s longest it was just sitting above my butt. Pretty insane! For a few months I ummed and ahhd about getting a hair cut. I hated washing it, brushing it and just generally dealing with it. The amount of things hair can get caught in is also ridiculous. I found myself spending a lot of time looking at haircuts just below the shoulders. They are currently all the rage in Hollywood and everyone just looks so fresh and sexy afterwards! I kept thinking it over until one day I finally thought, ‘What is the point of having all this hair when all I do is put it in a bun all the time?’.

I started really slowly. I didn’t want to shock myself. I definitely recommend this if you are thinking of going for the chop. I had a freak out moment when I first cut off about 10 inches.

As you can see, it was still what I would consider longish hair. I even went for the ombre there for a while! My hairdresser was really nice about the whole thing. He knew I was super scared and made me feel really comfortable. He was like ‘Girl just do it! It grows back anyways!’ Despite this, I did have a freak out when I was walking home afterwards and saw my reflection on the side of a building. Who was that?! Where had all her hair gone? After a few days I started to like it though. Then I started to love it. So much so that I went for the original ‘just below the shoulder’ cut I had been coveting. I guess the technical term is a Lob?

I’ve honestly never looked back 🙂
